What is a screening test?
Hearing screening performed by an audiologist is a basic hearing test. Its purpose is to identify possible signs of hearing loss in order to guide individuals to the appropriate resources. It is not a diagnostic test, but rather an awareness-raising step to assess your listening comfort.
In accordance with the recommendations of the Ordre des audioprothésistes du Québec, we offer this screening service exclusively to individuals aged 18 and over. For the specific needs of children, a consultation with an audiologist is required.
Who should undergo hearing screening?
- Workers in a noisy work environment
- People aged 50 and over
- People with a family history (e.g., hereditary deafness)
- Anyone else who wants to check their hearing
Poor hearing can have a significant impact on your quality of life, your work, and your relationships with others. Having your hearing checked and tested allows you to better understand your hearing and, if necessary, seek appropriate follow-up care from a healthcare professional.
Why take a hearing test?
- You often make people repeat themselves.
- You complain that people don't speak loudly enough.
- Turn up the TV to extreme volumes
- Difficulty understanding and hearing on the phone
If you think you may have hearing difficulties, a simple hearing screening test will give you more information and allow you to take appropriate action. If you are aged 60 or over, it is recommended that you have a test every two years.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have questions about hearing screening, how long a consultation lasts, or the difference between hearing professionals? We have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions to help you understand more clearly.
What happens during a hearing screening appointment?
A hearing screening begins with a brief discussion about your listening habits and personal history. Next, a quick, non-invasive test is performed in a soundproof booth using specialized equipment to check your ability to perceive different sound frequencies. The results are explained to you immediately and, if hearing loss is detected, further steps will be suggested to analyze your situation in greater depth.
How long does a consultation last?
A screening appointment usually lasts 20 to 30 minutes.
What is the difference between a screening test performed by a hearing aid specialist and a hearing evaluation performed by an audiologist?
Hearing screening is a basic test that determines whether hearing is within normal limits or whether hearing loss is suspected. This short appointment does not provide a diagnosis, but serves as an initial indicator to refer the patient to the appropriate resources if necessary.
A comprehensive hearing test, performed by an independent audiologist, is an in-depth clinical procedure. This detailed analysis aims to precisely identify the nature and degree of hearing loss in order to make a clinical diagnosis. Based on this test, the hearing care professional can then offer you the rehabilitation solutions best suited to your needs.
Is it covered by RAMQ or private insurance?
Hearing screening tests are free of charge at all our clinics. A full audiology assessment may be covered by some private insurance plans, depending on your coverage. We recommend that you check directly with your insurer to find out about reimbursement terms and conditions.
